MUST Social Service Team held the activity of 「Paws in Macao」

2024/11/27

In an effort to support stray animals and instill a sense of compassion and responsibility toward all living beings among college students, MUST Social Service Team (SST) supervised by the Student Affairs Office successfully held a meaningful volunteer event. This initiative promoted “not abandoning” and “adopting instead of buying” pets. Led by team leader Yang Wendi and project coordinator He Mu, the event took place on November 23 and attracted enthusiastic participation from numerous college students.

The participating students went to the dog shelter and cat park in groups to assist the staff in cleaning the dog and cat kennels. A participating student said: When cleaning up dog hair and garbage, I looked at these homeless puppies and felt a deep sadness. I wanted to take them all home. After the cleanup work was completed, the students also spent a pleasant interactive time with the small animals. The SST members who participated in the dog shelter activity said that the event provided them with a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the current situation of stray animals in Macau and the challenges faced by pet abandonment. Many SST members also emphasized that pets are not toys, and from the moment you decide to keep a pet, you should take responsibility for its life. The SST members pointed out that abandoning animals at will is an extremely selfish act, and called on everyone to think carefully before deciding to keep a pet and try to choose to adopt rather than buy. At the same time, those who are able are encouraged to help stray animals by donating money or time.

During the event, the student's enthusiasm and meticulousness were impressive. In the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the cattery, many students and SST members not only devoted themselves to their work but also actively interacted with the cats. In the subsequent small sharing session, everyone discussed how to better speak up for stray animals and continue to promote the concept of animal protection in the future. A student who participated in the event shared: Our voices can help more people understand the plight of stray animals, which makes me feel a sense of responsibility.

This volunteer activity not only enabled the participating students to increase their understanding of stray animals but also invisibly cultivated our empathy and sense of responsibility. Everyone expressed that this experience made them deeply aware of the importance of caring for life and also inspired them to continue to participate in animal protection activities. Looking into the future, we look forward to more activities like this to attract more people to pay attention to the living conditions of stray animals and jointly create an environment full of love and hope for them.
